God’s plan and purpose

Scripture: Proverbs 30-31, Psalm 33, Ephesians 1

Ephesians 1:8b-10 In all his wisdom and insight 9God did what he had purposed, and made known to us the secret plan he had already decided to complete by means of Christ. 10This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head.

Psalm 33:10-11 The Lord frustrates the purposes of the nations;

he keeps them from carrying out their plans.

11 But his plans endure for ever;

his purposes last eternally.

Observation/application

I was struck by all that was said about God’s plans and purposes.

First, God’s plans and purposes are forever; they are eternal and they will come to pass.  The plans and purposes of the nations are temporary and are subject to God’s judgment.  He can frustrate them and keep them from happening.

Nations are temporary.  I love our nation—but like every nation before or after, it is temporary.  All nations rise and fall.  Even if our nation lasts until Jesus returns, it will end then.  The best thing we can do for our nation is to help it align with the purposes of God, which are eternal.

And the best thing we can do personally is align with the purposes of God.  My plans and purposes are also temporary, but when I “seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness,” I align with Him and His eternal purposes.

Second, God’s plan and purpose is to bring everything together under Christ.  Every knee will bow, every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.  So aligning with God’s purpose means first that I submit to Jesus and then I help everyone around me do the same.

This is where history is headed: everything will come together with Jesus as the head.  Whatever I can do to align myself and others with God’s eternal purpose is what will last, what will matter in the end.

Today, I want to live with this eternal perspective, with an awareness of God’s eternal purpose and plan to bring everything together under Jesus!

Prayer: Lord, this is a big idea!  Help me today to see my life and my actions as part of your grand plan and live accordingly!
