God’s power is unstoppable!

Scripture: Psalm 125, Matthew 26-27

Matthew 27:65 “Take a guard,” Pilate told them; “go and make the tomb as secure as you can.”

Observation/application

The Jewish leaders had succeeded in having Jesus executed, but they still had one worry.  Jesus had predicted that He would be raised on the third day.  They didn’t believe for a moment this was true, but they were worried that His disciples would steal the body and then claim a resurrection.  If this happened, “this last lie would be even worse than the first one.”

So they went to Pilate seeking a Roman guard to secure the tomb.  Pilate seems to have granted them one (there is some debate about whether Pilate gave them a Roman guard or told them to use their own Jewish temple police), and they secured the tomb the best they could.

The tomb entrance was covered by a large rock, and then sealed with a cord and a wax seal—no one could open the tomb without breaking the seal.  The purpose of the seal was to act as an official “do not tamper” sign.  Then the guard took their posts.  Their job was to prevent anyone from tampering with the body for the first three days.

The Jewish leaders went home satisfied that they had put an end to Jesus and His movement.  He was dead.  His tomb was guarded and secured.  Done.

But God raised Him from the dead.  Human beings did the best they could to kill Him and keep Him in the grave—but God raised Him from the dead.  Man’s best is no match for God’s power.  Death could not hold Him!  Nor could their stone or seal or sentries.

Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Ephesians 1:19–20 And I pray that you would know…19 his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.

The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in you!  Jesus’ resurrection is the core of the gospel and reminds us that God’s power is unstoppable!

Prayer: Help me today Lord to live in Your unstoppable resurrection power!
