If only you knew

Scripture: John 2-4

John 4: 10 Jesus answered, “If only you knew what God gives and who it is that is asking you for a drink, you would ask him, and he would give you life-giving water.”

When Jesus asks for a drink of water from a well, a Samaritan woman challenges Him.  “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan—how can you ask me for a drink?”  And this is Jesus’ reply.

If only you knew.

If only you knew what God gives.  This woman—and most people—have no idea of the good that God wants to give them.  He wants to give us life—abundant and full and eternal!  If only we knew…

If only you knew who is asking you for a drink.  This woman—and most people—have no idea who Jesus is and what He could do in their lives.  Because of her encounter with Jesus, this woman’s understanding of Jesus changed.  He went from “a Jew” (v. 9) to “a prophet” (v. 19) to possibly “the Messiah” (v. 29) to “the Savior of the world” (v. 42).  And it wasn’t just her who came to this understanding, but many more of her village neighbors.  Once they knew, their lives were changed forever.

If only you knew…

You can hear the heart of Jesus for people.  He wants us to know Him!

I couldn’t help but think about all the people who, like this woman, have no idea who Jesus is or what He has for them.  If only they knew.  Knowing Jesus changing everything.  It changed this woman’s life forever; it’s changed mine forever.  And now it is my privilege to let people know about Jesus, knowing that He will give them the life-giving water and change them forever too.

Prayer: Let this rumble in my soul all day today (and every day): if only you knew.  Remind me that You are what people really need and want—they just need to know.  Use me to let them know.
