Scripture: 2 Kings 15-16, Hosea 1, Hebrews 1
Hebrews 1:1-3 In the past, God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many ways through the prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us through his Son. He is the one through whom God created the universe, the one whom God has chosen to possess all things at the end. 3He reflects the brightness of God’s glory and is the exact likeness of God’s own being, sustaining the universe with his powerful word. After achieving forgiveness for human sins, he sat down in heaven at the right-hand side of God, the Supreme Power.
Hebrews is all about the supremacy of Jesus. It was written to a group of Christians who were in danger of drifting away from Jesus and back into their old religion. The author methodically shows the supremacy of Jesus over angels, over Old Testament heroes such as Moses and Joshua, over the Jewish covenants, priesthood, laws and sacrifices.
But perhaps nothing declares the supremacy of Jesus better than the first three verses!
Jesus is God’s ultimate and final word to us. In the past, God spoke through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us through his Son. What is God saying? Look to Jesus; listen to Jesus; he is God’s word.
Jesus is the beginning and the end. He is the agent of creation at the beginning, and he is the one who will possess all things in the end. All things are from him, and all things are for him.
Jesus is God. He perfectly reflects God’s glory, and he is the exact likeness of God’s own being. Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus. “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father,” Jesus said.
Jesus is not only the beginning and the end; he is the middle too. He is the one who holds all things together, sustaining the universe with his powerful word! He is all in all.
Jesus secured forgiveness for our sins. And…
Jesus sat down at God’s right hand, the place of power and authority. Jesus reigns. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me,” he said.
Thinking there is something better than Jesus out there? Think again!
Prayer: Lord, thanks for the reminder that Jesus is supreme, and everything I need is wrapped up in him. Help me to look no farther than Jesus.
