You are Worthy!

Scripture: Revelation 5-9

Revelation 5:9-10 They sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to break open its seals.  For you were killed and by your sacrificial death you bought for God people from every tribe, language, nation, and race.  You have made them a kingdom of priests to serve our God, and they shall rule on earth.”

Revelation 5 opens with God on His throne holding a scroll.  An angel asks, “Who is worthy to open the scroll?”  The answer: no one.  No one on earth or in heaven or in all of history!  No one…except the Lion of Judah, the Lamb who was slain.  Only Jesus is worthy!

When the Lamb takes the scroll, a tidal wave of worship erupts.  Three songs are sung by ever-increasing groups.

First, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fall down before the Lamb and sing the song in v. 9-10 above.

Second, millions of angels join in and sing the song in v. 12, “Worthy is the Lamb…”

Third, “every creature in heaven, on earth, in the world below, and in the sea—all living beings in the universe” join in and sing the song in v. 13, “To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be praise and honor, glory and power, forever and ever.”

A couple things strike me.

First, only Jesus is worthy.  No one else was found who was worthy—no one.  I am not worthy; Jesus is.  This is the gospel in a nutshell.  I am not good enough; Jesus is. Jesus supplies what I lack; Jesus does what I can’t.

Second, Jesus is worthy of our worship—everyone’s worship.  Everyone joins in the song.  One day, every knee will bow, every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord, and everyone will cry, “You alone are worthy.”

Third, we’ll all worship Jesus together—every tribe, language, nation and race.  Jesus is the great unifier; He brings us all together as one.  We need to learn to worship together now because we’ll be doing it forever!

Fourth, worship is the serious business of heaven!  When we see Him, we can’t help but join the song: “Worthy is the Lord!”  We can get started now!

Today, I’m joining the song.  When I read this, I was on my indoor recumbent cycle and I started singing, “Worthy is the Lamb!”  I’m writing the weekend message today, and while I write, I’m going to play a lot of “Worthy” songs and sing along, and set my heart to join the song in heaven.  It’s a day of worship!

Prayer: Lord, You are worthy!  You are worthy of my love, devotion, praise, and worship.  You are worthy of my obedience and allegiance.  You are worthy of all my time, my money, my stuff, my attention, my affection—all that I have.  You alone are worthy!
