Current relationship, not pedigree

Scripture: Genesis 6-8, Luke 3

Luke 3:8 Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

There were Jewish people who heard John preach, but didn’t feel the need to repent because of their Jewish heritage.  “I’m ok; I’m one of God’s chosen people.”  John called them to repentance—real change that was visible in their actions.  And he warned them not to rely on their spiritual pedigree.

As Christians, we should learn from this that we can’t rely on our pedigree, on our past experience or our parentage.  We need to have our own current, authentic relationship with God that produces fruit in our lives.  Someone said, “God has no grandchildren.”

I want my relationship with Jesus to be current and authentic.  I want to hear Him speak to me today, and not just rely on what I heard in the past.  I want to know Him personally, and not rely on other people’s relationship with Him.  I honor my heritage, but don’t want to live in the past, but in the present with Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, speak to me today and help me to follow you today.  I want our relationship to be current, authentic and fresh.
