Get some rest
Scripture: Numbers 21-23, Mark 6
Mark 6:31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
It was a crazy busy time for Jesus and the disciples: lots of people coming and going, so busy that they didn’t even have time to eat. Jesus says one of my favorite sayings in the Bible: “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
There is always more to do, but sometimes we need to stop and rest. Jesus knew that. There were more people to heal and feed and teach—and always will be—but Jesus called a time out. Time alone, time to rest. He knows we need it.
I talked with a friend yesterday who was so exhausted and overwhelmed he was in tears. I’m praying he hears this call from Jesus.
And I’ve been in one of those crazy busy seasons—long full days, few days off. On Sunday, I hit a wall (a small one)—I got home at 4 and went straight to bed and took a two hour nap. I’m not a napper; I don’t like naps. But I was exhausted. The next two weeks are more of the same.
So I stopped. I cancelled my plans for yesterday and today. I stayed home—alone. I slept in. I’m quietly catching up on some tasks…but slowly. I’m resting before I fly out tomorrow on the Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage—a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Prayer: Lord, thanks that you care about us—even about our pace of life, and our physical and emotional well-being. Thanks for this call to get some rest!
PS: The story of Balaam’s donkey shows that God has a sense of humor! 😂
