God gives the growth

Scripture: Joshua 1-2, Psalm 37, 1 Corinthians 3

1 Corinthians 3:6-7 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.

The Corinthians tended to rally around their favorite leader and glorify them.  “I belong to Paul.”  Or “I belong to Apollos.”  Paul is writing to correct this tribalism, and here he discusses the true role of these leaders.  They are each servants doing what God asked them to do.  Each has a role to play, but it is God Himself who does the real work and gives the growth.

Today in church I talked about the power of multiplication that’s inside an apple, and inside each of us who follow Jesus.  We have an “imperishable seed” inside us and when we share Jesus with others, it has multiplying power!  The power isn’t me—it’s God’s power.  I do my part—I share Jesus with someone—but I can’t save or heal or change anyone.  Only God can do that.  I plant or water, but God gives the growth.  This takes so much pressure off me!  I do the possible—my small part—but God does the impossible.  God gives the growth.

Prayer: Lord, help me to do my small part knowing that You have got this!  You will give the growth.
