Scripture: 1 Samuel 19, 1 Chronicles 7, Psalm 59, Matthew 4
Psalm 59:1 Deliver me from my enemies, my God; protect me from those who rise up against me.
Psalm 59 was written during or after David’s experiences in 1 Samuel 19. He prays for God’s deliverance and protection—the story tells how God answered that prayer.
First, God protected David through Saul’s son Jonathan, who appealed to his father, arguing that David was an ally not a threat, and there was no reason to kill him. Saul agreed. But as soon as war broke out and David won more victories, Saul’s jealousy rekindled, and he tried to kill David.
Second, God protected David through Saul’s daughter, Michal, who was married to David. When Saul sent agents to arrest David, Michal lied and covered up to give David time to escape. David fled to Samuel.
Third, God protected David through His Spirit! Three times, Saul sent agents to Samuel to arrest David, and the agents began prophesying—meaning they fell into a prophetic ecstasy. Finally Saul himself came and he too began prophesying, lying naked before Samuel for a full day and night, rendered helpless by prophetic ecstasy, allowing David to escape again. It must have been a funny scene, and the proverb, “Is Saul also among the proverbs?” became a joke.
First, I think God has a sense of humor. Psalm 59:8 says, “But You laugh at them, Lord; You ridicule all the nations.” I think God was laughing when He poured out His Spirit on Saul’s agents and then on Saul. And it must have been hilarious to see these men, bent on arrest and execution, rendered helpless by the Holy Spirit.
Second, God is to be trusted and praised. The psalm ends with praise. Psalm 59:17 “To You, my strength, I sing praises, because God is my stronghold—my faithful God.” I don’t know if David wrote this after the events or during. If it was after, then he is praising God for His faithful care. If it was during, he is praising God as an expression of faith for His faithful care.
Today, I am trusting and praising God for His care for me. And I’m laughing with God at His enemies. God is for me; who can be against me?
Prayer: Lord, You are full of surprises! When problems arise, help me to laugh, knowing that God is laughing too. Nothing is too hard for You!
