God of the past, present and future
Scripture: Ezekiel 8-11, Revelation 4
Revelation 4:8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”
The Lord is the One who was, and is, and is to come. He is the eternal I AM. He is the God of the past, the present and the future. He inhabits all three, and because of that, we can trust Him with all three: with our past, our present and our future.
Some of us are trapped in our past. A hurt, a failure has left us stuck and paralyzed. The Lord God Almighty is the One who was. He is the God of our past, and is able to heal and redeem and free us. We no longer have to be slaves of our history because He is the Lord of our stories.
Some of us are stuck in the present. We feel powerless to change. We are victims of our past and afraid of our future. We are adrift. The Lord God Almighty is the One who is. He is the God of our present, and is able to change us right now. We no longer have to feel stuck because He is present and at work—right now.
Some of us are afraid of the future. We feel dread and anxiety every time we think about what might happen. The Lord God Almighty is the One who is coming. He is the God of our future, and He says, “I know the plans I have for you, plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” We no longer have to fear the future for He is present there too, and the best is yet to come.
Prayer: Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come—remind us that You are the Lord of past, present and future, and help us to turn all of those over to You.
