Listen and obey

Scripture: Jeremiah 26, 35-36, John 20

Jeremiah 35:17 I have spoken to them, but they have not obeyed, and I have called to them, but they did not answer.

Jeremiah’s message—and that of the other prophets—can be summarized by this one verse.  “I spoke and you didn’t listen or obey.”  People ignored God’s words.  They wouldn’t listen and obey.  And finally judgment came.

In the Great Commission, Jesus gives us our marching orders: in all your going, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded.  We are to teach people what Jesus said, and more importantly, to obey what Jesus said.  This is what disciples do: we learn and we live it.  We listen and we obey.

Compare Jeremiah 26:4 “This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen to me by living according to my instruction that I set before you…”  Notice that phrase: “listen to me by living according to my instruction.”  To listen and learn is to obey.  To listen and not obey is not to really listen at all.  To listen is to obey.  Listen and obey.

My challenge today (and every day) is to listen to Jesus and do what He says.

Prayer: Lord, help me to listen to what You say and more importantly, do it!
