Love is the main thing!

Scripture: Job 39-40, 1 Corinthians 13-14

1 Corinthians 13:1–3 If I speak human or angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.

I was struck again by Paul’s ode to love, particularly how important love is.  Paul names several praiseworthy characteristics or actions, then says that without love, they are nothing.

If I speak in tongues (this was a prized spiritual gift in Corinth—and today among Pentecostals like me) but don’t have love, I’m just making noise.  Love is the main thing!

If I can prophesy, or understand all mysteries and knowledge (wow!), or have mountain-moving faith, but don’t have love, I am nothing.  I’m not a spiritual giant—I am nothing!  Love is the main thing!

If I make the ultimate sacrifices—giving all I have away, and even giving my life away as a martyr—but don’t have love, I gain nothing.  All that giving and sacrifice amounts to nothing…without love.  Love is the main thing!

Paul could not have said it more dramatically!

Love is doing what is best for another no matter what it costs me.  Love must motivate every thing I do.  If my motivation is selfish, I’m just making noise; I am nothing, and I gain nothing.  But if my motivation is love, if I act to benefit others, then every gift, every act, every sacrifice is empowered and counts.

Today is another opportunity to live JOY—Jesus, Others, You.  Live a life of love—love is the main thing!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for loving me; now empower me with your love to give it away to everyone I’m with today.
