The surpassing value
Scripture: 1 Kings 13-14, 2 Chronicles 12, Philippians 3
Philippians 3:7-8 But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ.
Paul lists all his religious merits: circumcised on the 8th day; of the people of Israel; of the tribe of Benjamin; a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless! Paul’s religious pedigree was unsurpassed. If anyone would be acceptable to God based on merit, Paul said, “It’s me!”
But Paul met Jesus and everything changed! Paul had learned that God doesn’t accept us on our merit but His grace. So everything that Paul had bragged about was now rendered worthless. He let go of all his claims, all his merit in order to take hold of Jesus. He lost it all to gain Jesus. And Jesus is worth it!
I love the phrase, “the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Stack up whatever you want against it and knowing Jesus is always better. There is nothing more important, more life-giving, more fulfilling than knowing Jesus. Whatever else I pursue, I must pursue Jesus first and foremost, because knowing Him is the surpassing value, the greatest and most excellent thing.
What is your “surpassing value?” What is at the top of your values pyramid? If it is anything other than Jesus, that’s idolatry. I want to live every day with “the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”
Prayer: Lord, there really is nothing more important or valuable than knowing You. Today, I will make knowing You my highest value.
