Opportunity and opposition
Scripture: Judges 9-10, Psalm 49, 1 Corinthians 16
1 Corinthians 16:8-9 But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, because a wide door for effective ministry has opened for me—yet many oppose me.
Paul was discussing his travel plans and adds that he will stay longer in Ephesus because of an open door for effective ministry. Then this: “yet many oppose me.”
We tend to think of “open doors” as unhindered opportunities. When God opens a door, He clears all the obstacles; He makes the way open and easy. But here was an open door with much opposition!
For Paul, opposition was expected and everywhere, and never determined whether a door was open. With every opportunity for the ministry, for the gospel to advance, there would be opposition. So opposition didn’t mean a closed door.
When faced with opposition, don’t take it as a closed door, a sign to quit, move on or do something else. Most opportunities come with opposition. Move ahead. Embrace the opportunity and don’t fear the opposition.
Prayer: Lord, help me to fearlessly embrace the opportunities You set before me, and never be deterred by the opposition.
