Pray for everyone so everyone can be saved
Scripture: 2 Kings 4-5, Psalm 83, 1 Timothy 2
1 Timothy 2:1ff First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone… 3 This is good and it pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth…8 Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.
Between two calls to prayer (v. 1, v. 8), Paul says that God wants everyone to be saved. I’d never noticed this connection. Could Paul be saying that praying for everyone is part of God’s desire and work to save everyone?
When Peter confessed that Jesus was the Christ, Jesus told him that no human being told him that, nor did he figure it out on his own, but God revealed it to him. We can tell the gospel—and should—but only God can awaken someone to its truth. This is why prayer is such an important part of people coming to faith in Jesus. We ask God to do what only God can do.
Today, I want to be ready to share my faith in Jesus with anyone and everyone. But first, I want to pray for everyone I meet—for everyone anywhere—to hear and respond to God’s love.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be a better pray-er as part of being a better evangelist!
