We need God’s word to live

Scripture: Genesis 9-11, Luke 4

Luke 4:3-4 The Devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.”

Observation

Jesus responds to the devil’s temptation by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”  We are not just physical beings with physical needs.  We are spiritual beings with spiritual needs.  Two things strike me:

First, Jesus knew God’s word and could quote it at will.  That’s a great example for us!  Jesus makes it clear that we need God’s word as much (or more) as our daily food.  We need God’s word to live—we don’t live by bread alone, but by God’s word.

Second, because we are spiritual creatures, we should pay as much (or more) attention to our spiritual well-being as to our physical.  Most people pay little attention to either, but there are also many people with fit bodies and flabby souls.  I want to be fit spiritually and physically.  It requires deliberate effort and intention.

Application

I will be deliberate and intentional about feeding daily on God’s word.  I love to eat!  In fact, I eat more than I need!  I want to be as eager to feast on God’s word as I am for my next meal or snack.  I need God’s word to live!

Prayer: Lord, help me to hunger for more of You, and for Your word!  Help me to understand how important this is: as essential for my spirit as food is for my body.
