A shocking warning

Scripture: Ezekiel 4-7, Revelation 3

Revelation 3:15–16  I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

In each letter to the seven churches, Jesus offers some words of commendation—except for the last one.  To the Laodicean church, Jesus gives no commendation, only correction.  This was the lukewarm church, self-satisfied and unaware of their blindness and poverty.  Jesus actually pictures himself outside this church, knocking and seeking entrance!

This letter stands as a stark warning against lukewarmness.  Beware of spiritual self-satisfaction, smug self-righteousness, thinking you have it all together and settling for mediocrity.  It should challenge us every time we read it!

I’m struck by the fact that this church alone received no commendation.  Jesus had nothing good to say to a lukewarm church—only correction and a call to repent and an invitation to open the door to Him.  That tells us how serious their condition was—and should awaken us to the seriousness of our own lukewarm condition.

I’m also struck by the fact that Jesus pictures Himself outside this church knocking to gain entrance.  In their complacency they didn’t even notice that Jesus had left the building!  Lukewarmness results in spiritual blindness—a lack of awareness.

So how do I check myself?  My best answer is to seek the Lord and ask Him, “Am I lukewarm?  Where have I settled?  Where am I complacent and need to grow?”  I believe if we seek, we’ll find.  He’ll show us.

Prayer: So I’m asking Lord: show me where I’m lukewarm or complacent or half-hearted—so I can turn to You (repent) and rekindle the fire.
