Betterness

Scripture: Hebrews 5-8

Hebrews 7:19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

Hebrews 7:22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.

Hebrews 8:6 But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

Observation

“Better” is a key word in the book of Hebrews.  The author is writing to persuade Jewish Christians not to abandon their faith in Jesus and go back to observance of the Jewish law and religion.  His argument is that Jesus is superior in every way—Jesus is better.  So why would you go back?

In today’s reading, the author speaks of a better hope, a better covenant, and better promises.  Jesus is better!

Application

There are many people today trying to follow Jesus, but living under the old covenant.  They mix the old and the new, adding law-keeping to the grace of Jesus.  But Hebrews makes it clear that the old covenant couldn’t perfect us, and Jesus has brought a new and better covenant.  Stop trying to live under the old covenant and its laws.  Jesus is a new and better way!  Follow Him!

One other thing.  Recently, someone asked me if I thought you could lose your salvation.  The entire book of Hebrews is written to warn people not to abandon Jesus—just based on that, I’d say yes.  But…why would you want to?  Jesus is better!  When you understand the goodness of God, the “betterness” of Jesus, why would you leave?  In the words of Peter:

John 6:68  “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

There’s nothing better than Jesus!

Prayer: Lord, help me every day experience more of Your goodness, dive deeper into the “betterness” of Jesus!  I’ll never leave!
