Bread and light

Scripture: Matthew 1-4

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:16 “The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, and those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, upon them a light dawned.”

Observation

When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He answered every temptation by quoting Scripture.  He answered the first temptation to misuse His power to make bread by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, which says that man doesn’t live on bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.  Just as we need bread (food) to sustain us physically, we need God’s word to sustain us spiritually.

Later in the chapter, Matthew says that Jesus’ move to Capernaum was to fulfill the prophecy in Isaiah 9:1-2.  Jesus moved into a place of spiritual darkness and brought the light of God’s presence!

Application

First, I will feed my spirit every day on God’s word.  I need to hear from God daily just as much as I need to eat every day.  Don’t underestimate how important this is!  Jesus didn’t!

Second, I will memorize verses that are appropriate to the temptations I face, and when tempted, I will do what Jesus did.  “It is written..” And quote the verse!  Resist temptation with God’s powerful word.

Third, I will find dark places to move into and be the light of God in those places.  Yesterday, a friend told me that his wife is having a huge impact where she works out.  He said that it’s a very dark place, and she is shining there.  I thought of her when I read this verse, and I felt convicted that I need to get out more into dark places and be the light!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for Your powerful word!  Help me to feed on it, memorize it and use it to resist temptation.  And send me into the darkness to be Your light!
