Scripture: Ephesians 1-4
Ephesians 3:14–21 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
Paul concludes the doctrinal part of this letter with this soaring prayer. The highlights are that we would be strengthened with power through the Holy Spirit in our inner being; that Christ would dwell in our hearts through faith; that we would be rooted and grounded in love, and have the power together with all the saints to know the full dimensions of Christ’s love—how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ; and knowing this love that surpasses knowledge, we may be filled to measure of all the fullness of God.
I especially love that last phrase. Not just filled to the measure of my fullness, but filled to measure of God’s fullness. I can imagine myself a one quart jar. It only takes 32 ounces to fill me. But God is a jar as big as the universe! He holds all things together in Himself. If He fills me to that measure—God’s fullness—then I will quickly overflow!
That’s what I need. I have had moments of feeling dry, empty, and I need to be filled. I love this prayer that He will fill me to the measure of His fullness—overflowing with Him, overflowing with His measureless love that is beyond knowing in its full dimensions. Fill me Lord!
