He knows where I am

Scripture: Genesis 20-22, Luke 8

Genesis 21:17 God heard the lad crying; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter with you, Hagar?  Do not fear, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.”

This is the second time that Hagar found herself alone in the wilderness.  The first time (Gen 16), she was pregnant and fled from her abusive mistress, Sarai.  This time, Abraham has sent her and her son away at Sarah’s request.  Both times, God meets her in the wilderness.

The first time, the Lord revealed Himself as the God who sees and hears.  She was told to name her son, Ishmael, which means, “God hears,” for God heard her prayers.  And she called the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees.”  When she was lost and afraid, God knew where she was.  God sees, God found her, God heard her prayer and God spoke to her.

The second time, when she believed that she and her son would die in the wilderness, God found her again, heard her cry, spoke to her, and opened her eyes to see a well of water to quench their thirst.  Once again, God knew where she was.

And in both experiences, God led her to where she should be: in the first, back to Abram and Sarai; in the second, to her new home in the wilderness of Paran.

Sometimes we feel lost, alone, and hopeless.  But God knows where we are.  He is the God who sees and hears us.  He hears our prayers and leads us.

It is so good to know that even when I don’t know where I am, God knows where I am.  He sees me.  I am not lost.

Prayer: Thank You for this confidence: You know where I am!  You see me!  And You will lead me where I’m supposed to be next.
