We’re trying something new! In addition to my regular posts, once a week I’m going to record a quick video – it might be a verbal version of my written PBJ, some thought about what I’m reading, a fun piece of news, or something else wild and crazy!

Today’s is a quick comment on doing Prayer, Bible, Journal, and my reflection from Wednesday’s reading. Enjoy!

Do you have some suggestions on how to get motivated and begin a consistent PBJ time? The reasons I have not been consistent are feeling more like excuses but I just have no motivation. It’s a frustrating cycle of trying and then feeling like I’m not getting anything out of it then feeling like a failure for not following through.

Hi Jassminne – I’m sorry it’s been frustrating for you. First, remember that PBJ is about the relationship with Jesus, not about the task of praying, reading your Bible, and journaling. Here are a few other tips to help remove the friction of connecting with Jesus:

      1. Pick a place and time, or make a time, that’s easy to keep so you don’t have decide where and when
      2. Pick a plan (Pastor Joe uses the 15 minute one on our Bible page) so you don’t have decide what to read
      3. If it’s tough to focus on the reading, try using YouVersion’s audio versions (you might try a couple different ones to find a voice you enjoy) and experiment with different listening speeds
      4. Find a friend or two so even when it feels like you haven’t connected with Jesus, you’re connecting with a person
      5. Last, because this is a relationship, if you’ve read your Bible (listened), and journaled/prayed (responded), you’ve successfully invested in your relationship with Jesus. You don’t meet with friends or family to get something out of it, but because of love!

Please know that you’re not the only one to struggle with this practice, and let me re-emphasize the encouragement to connect with someone else – we’re better together!

I like this video a week concept. To Jassminne, I struggle too but I just keep plugging away. ( I’m an older person). Lately I’ve been trying to keep thinking about a section I’ve just read. For example Jacob and Esau and their lives. What a mess! God is very patient!
