Be attentive

Scripture: Job 20, Mark 3-4

Mark 4:24–25 Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. 25 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”

In the midst of using parables (stories, illustrations) to teach His disciples, Jesus slips in these words about paying attention and listening closely.

The closer you listen, the more you pay attention, the more understanding you will be given.

There were people who were hearing Jesus’ words but weren’t listening, being attentive, thinking about them.  That can be true of me—I can be in hurry and miss what He’s saying.

First, this is a great encouragement for a daily PBJ time—time with God to listen to His word, pay attention, gain understanding and make application.  Daily attentiveness.  Daily listening closely.  It’s not just going through the motions.  It’s being attentive to God.  You’ll gain understanding!

Second, this is a great encouragement to pay attention when God’s word is being read or taught.  It’s not just the pastor or teacher who is talking; God is speaking, if we’ll listen.  I want to approach each opportunity with an attentive and open heart.

Third, this is a great encouragement to be attentive during the day to the Spirit’s whisper.  He uses other people and circumstances to teach us—so pay attention!  Example: a few weeks ago a friend said he was learning that “activity isn’t achievement.”  That has resonated with me, and I’m applying it in some important areas of my life.

It’s easy to rush through life and not be attentive to God’s word or the voice of the Spirit.  Be attentive!  Listen closely!  God is speaking.

Prayer: Lord, help me be attentive today to Your Word and Your Spirit.
