Come away

Scripture: Ezekiel 33-35, Revelation 18

Revelation 18:4 Then I heard another voice calling from heaven, “Come away from her, my people. Do not take part in her sins, or you will be punished with her.”

John sees a vision of the fall of Babylon. Babylon represents the powers of this world living in rebellion against God. A voice from heaven calls God’s people to come away from Babylon and not take part in her sins or they will be caught in her punishment. “Come away from her.”

Followers of Jesus are called to live in the Kingdom of God—that is, under the reign of God, doing His will. We are a counter-culture to the prevailing culture of the world, wherever we live. We are to be different, marching to a different drumbeat. Paul put it this way:

Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

“Come away from her.”

In what ways has the world squeezed me into its mold? Am I doing the will of God or am I fitting in with the world? It’s easy to go with the flow, to fit in to be accepted. Jesus doesn’t call us to do that, but to follow Him, do what God wants and stand out.

Prayer: Lord, I probably don’t even know all the ways I’m entangled with the world. Show me where I need to “come away from her.” And help me to know and do the will of God!
