Great is Your Faithfulness

Scripture: Lamentations 3-5, Revelation 15

Lamentations 3:19–24

19 The thought of my suffering and homelessness

is bitter beyond words.

20 I will never forget this awful time,

as I grieve over my loss.

21 Yet I still dare to hope

when I remember this:

22 The faithful love of the Lord never ends!

His mercies never cease.

23 Great is his faithfulness;

his mercies begin afresh each morning.

24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance;

therefore, I will hope in him!”

Jeremiah had just watched his beloved nation be invaded by Babylon. Thousands were killed, women were raped, cities were razed and burned, and many were taken away into captivity. Even Jerusalem with its beautiful temple was leveled and burned. Everything was in ruins; everything Jeremiah loved was gone.

He reflected on his bitter loss and suffering, and found reason to still hope: “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning.” Even in the face of devastating loss, Jeremiah determined to “hope in Him.”

I’m looking at pictures of the devastation in Malden caused by a wildfire. Similar fires are burning across the West. One of my sisters and her family and one of Laina’s sisters and her family are currently evacuated in Oregon. Thousands of people are facing catastrophic loss.

Add to that the COVID pandemic and all the loss and suffering it has brought, both physical and economic.

Add to that years of suffering and pain experienced by people of color that is now erupting in racial protest.

Add to that the political tension of this election year, fueled by some of the deepest partisanship of my lifetime.

If ever we needed Jeremiah’s words, it is now. We can still hope in the Lord. His mercies are new every morning. His faithful love never ends. Great is His faithfulness!

Today, I’m leaning into the Lord’s mercies and casting my cares on Him. I’m praying like crazy for our world, our nation, our state and city, and those I love.

Prayer: Lord, I pray that in this difficult season we will not despair, but will trust in Your unfailing love and faithfulness.
