I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets

Scripture: Numbers 10-11, Psalm 27, Mark 1

Numbers 11:29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit upon them all!”

Psalm 27:8 My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”

Moses needed help, and the Lord instructed him to choose 70 elders upon whom God would place His Spirit.  When that happened, the elders prophesied.  But two of them were back in camp, not at the tabernacle.  When Joshua heard that they were prophesying in camp—unsupervised, independent of Moses—he asked Moses if he should go stop them.  Verse 29 is Moses’ reply.

It seems that Joshua was jealous for Moses, wanted to protect his position and authority.  Moses, after all, was the friend of God, the one with whom the Lord spoke face-to-face.  Suddenly there were 70 others upon whom the Spirit rested, who heard from the Lord and spoke for him, and two of them were operating outside the boundaries!  Joshua wanted to protect Moses.

But Moses says a wonderful thing.  He wished that all the Lord’s people were Spirit filled and could prophesy—something that the apostle Paul echoes later (see 1 Corinthians 14:5).  Under the new covenant, God pours out His Spirit on all flesh, men and women, young and old, and we can prophesy—that is, we can hear from God and speak His word.

Psalm 27:8 says this in a different way.  The Lord invites the psalmist to come and talk and the psalmist responds, “I’m coming.”  God invites us into relationship—a conversational relationship.  What Moses once enjoyed alone is now available to anyone who follows Jesus.

“Come and talk with Me.”

You can hear from God!  And what you hear, you can tell others.  You can be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).  You can prophesy.

Like Moses, I’m praying today that all of God’s people would be filled with His Spirit, would talk with Him and hear from Him and prophesy!

Prayer: Lord, let that happen!
