It’s a spiritual battle

Scripture: Song of Solomon 1-4, Ephesians 6

Ephesians 6:10–13 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.  13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

Paul wraps up his letter to the Ephesian Christians with a call to spiritual warfare and prayer.  He reminds us that we are engaged in a spiritual battle, that we are fighting forces of evil that are not human.  There are “evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, mighty powers in this dark world, evil spirits in the heavenly places.”  Our battle is not primarily with human beings, but with spiritual forces of evil.

Therefore, we need to put on the full armor of God. We need God’s strength and power, and we need to fight a spiritual battle with spiritual weapons: truth, righteousness, peace, the gospel, faith, salvation, the word of God and prayer.

We tend to forget that we are engaged in a spiritual battle.  I tend to see human beings as the enemy; Paul saw Satan as the enemy, and people as victims of the enemy.  Of course there are evil people who need to be resisted.  But if that’s all we do, if we only fight people and not the real enemy, we are like someone looking in the mirror and trying to straighten their hair by brushing the mirror.  We won’t get the change we desire.

Jesus came to defeat Satan, and calls His followers into the battle.  To win the battle, we use the strength, power and armor of God.  We fight deceit with truth.  With resist evil with righteousness.  We bring peace and reconciliation with the gospel.  We quench the enemy’s fiery arrows with faith.  We live as saved people and help others be saved.  We resist the devil as Jesus did with the word of God.  And we pray…and pray…and pray.

Prayer: Lord, help us to understand the nature of the battle we’re fighting, and teach us how to use the armor of God to stand and win!
