It’s best for you…

Scripture: Jeremiah 16-17, Psalm 96, John 16

John 16:7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

When Jesus said this, it must have blown the disciples’ minds!  How could it possibly be best for them for Jesus to go away?

Jesus’ answer is that He would send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to be with them.  In the flesh, Jesus could only be at one place at one time, with a limited group of people.  When He went away with Peter, James and John, He wasn’t with the other disciples and they got into trouble (see Mark 9:14-28).

But the Holy Spirit is not bound by time and space.  The Spirit can be with each of us all the time.

I have often wished that Jesus could be here in the flesh with me.  But Jesus says it’s better to have the Holy Spirit, who can be with me 24/7—and still be with you!

Francis Chan wrote a book about the Holy Spirit entitled Forgotten God.  His point is that we talk about the Father and about Jesus, but tend to ignore or forget the Holy Spirit.  And yet Jesus said it was best for us that He go away and send us the Holy Spirit.

Today, I want to be aware of the Spirit’s presence and power in my life.  I want to listen for the Spirit’s voice and follow the Spirit’s leading.  It’s best!

2 Corinthians 13:14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, speak to me, lead me, work in me today—and help me be attentive to Your presence.  Let’s fellowship today!
