Jesus feels deeply
Scripture: Ezra 1, Psalm 84-85, Luke 6
Luke 7:9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”
Luke 7:13 When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.
I was struck by two emotions that Jesus felt.
First, He was amazed at the faith of the Roman centurion who said, “You don’t need to come to my house to heal my servant; just say the word and it will be done.” I call that “just say the word faith”. And that’s the kind of faith I want—I want to amaze Jesus with my faith. Honestly, I’m not there. I want my faith to grow, and for that to happen, I need to pray and put myself out there—risk more. I don’t think that Jesus is amazed with me, but I want Him to be!
Second, His heart overflowed with compassion when He saw a widow weeping over the loss of her only son—and He raised the young man to life. This miracle seems to be motivated by pure compassion. I believe that Jesus sees us as we are and still feels this compassion for us, for our pain and suffering and weakness. He understands our weakness. He feels our pain. We can come to Him with anything. I want to be like Jesus and feel deeply for others—so deeply that I do what I can to ease their pain.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for feeling so deeply—that comforts and encourages me. Please grow my faith and my compassion.
