Listen to Jesus, do what He says
Scripture: Jeremiah 26, 35-36, John 20
Jeremiah 26:2–6 “This is what the Lord says: … speak to all the people of the towns of Judah .… Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word. 3 Perhaps they will listen and each will turn from their evil ways. Then I will relent and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done. 4 Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you, 5 and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened), 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh and this city a curse among all the nations of the earth.’ ”
The Lord kept speaking to Judah again and again, first through His law then repeatedly through the prophets. Here, He commands Jeremiah to repeat everything God has told him in the hopes that this time they will listen and then God would relent on His judgment.
Jeremiah emphasized listening, reminding them that they had not listened to God’s law or the prophets again and again. If they don’t listen again, judgment would fall.
Did they listen? No! Their response was to shout, “Kill him!” Jeremiah barely escaped with his life thanks to the help of a few officials who intervened. They didn’t listen…again. And judgment fell.
Listen! Listen to Jesus and do what He says. This is what it means to be a follower of Jesus: we listen and do what He says.
Be attentive when you read Scripture. What is the Holy Spirit saying to you and what will you do about it?
Be attentive when you pray. What is the Holy Spirit saying to you and what will you do about it?
Be attentive during your day, when you’re with people or doing a task. What is the Holy Spirit saying to you and what will you do about it?
This is a challenge because I get so busy, go so fast that I’m not listening, not attentive. It’s not that I don’t want to listen, but that I’m busy, distracted and forgetful.
Listen to Jesus and do what He says.
Prayer: Simple prayer today, Lord: help me to be attentive, to listen to You and do what You say.
