Look to Jesus!

Scripture: Numbers 21-23, Mark 6

Numbers 21:8–9 Then the Lord told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!” 9 So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed!

When the Israelites grumbled against God (again), He sent poisonous snakes among them; many were bitten and died.  When they repented, God told Moses to make a replica of a snake and attach it to a pole (so it could be seen by many), and all who looked at it after being bitten would be healed.

Jesus uses this story as metaphor for his death.

John 3:14–15 And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.

People who are dying in sin are saved by the dead body of a man suspended on a cross.

Look to Jesus!  Our sin and rebellion always has dreadful consequences.  It kills us in so many ways: personally, emotionally, relationally, physically, socially, spiritually, and more.  I see people’s marriages fail because of sin, friendships dissolve because of sin, lives wasted because of sin.  When you feel the sting of your sin, look to Jesus.  He is God’s answer, the healing and saving that you need.  Look to Jesus, believe in Him, and let Him heal you and give you life.

Of course, first we have to admit our need.  Many are too proud to admit that they have sinned and rebelled against God.  And many of us won’t admit it until the poison is killing us.  The longer we go, the sicker we get.  Far better to own it, admit it, and look to Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, help us look to Jesus and be healed of the sin that is poisoning and killing us.
