Spiritual dipsomaniacs!

Scripture: 2 Kings 23, 2 Chronicles 35, John 7

John 7:37–39 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ” 39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

Observation

Jesus makes another stunning claim: anyone who is thirsty can come to Him and drink and be satisfied.  He promised to give the Holy Spirit in abundance to everyone who would believe in Him.  The Spirit would be for everyone who believes in Jesus “a river of living water flowing from his heart.”

Application

“Be filled with the Spirit,” Paul writes in Ephesians 5:18.  God’s will is that we be filled with Him, so full that rivers of living water flow out of us—filled to overflowing!

Come to Jesus and drink and be filled!  The verbs—believe, come and drink—are present tense and could be translated, “Keep believing, keep coming, keep drinking.”  They refer to an ongoing activity.  We don’t just come once, drink once.  We keep coming and drinking daily.  John Stott says we are “spiritual dipsomaniacs!”  We just can’t stop drinking in Jesus, downing the living water.

Is your heart overflowing with living water?  We are the product of our habits.  Build habits of believing, coming and drinking in Jesus every day.

Prayer: Thank You for the promise of living water filling and flowing out of us.  Fill me today, Lord, and let me splash all over everyone I’m with.
