Spread the light

Scripture: Isaiah 60-62, John 1

John 1:4–5 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

John 1:9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

The prologue of John’s gospel is soaring theology on Jesus as the eternal Word.  Beautiful and profound!

John loves the theme of light and darkness, and uses it to describe Jesus.  Later in the gospel, Jesus uses it of Himself.  “I am the Light of the world.”  John 8:12.  John adds that Jesus brought light to everyone.  The world was trapped in darkness—in ignorance of God.  Jesus brought light—the knowledge of God—and made it available to everyone.

John also explains that John the Baptist was not the light, but was a witness to the light, to tell about the light, or point people to the light.

Our job, like John the Baptist, is to point people to the light of Jesus.  In a dark world that seems to be growing darker, how we need the Light of the world, Jesus.  And how the world needs us to consistently, kindly and clearly point people to the light.  Many people want to know God—Jesus is the light who shows us who God is and what He is like.

Spread the light!

Prayer: Lord, help me in every encounter I have to spread the light of Jesus in a dark world.
