The aim of every Christian

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4-5, 2 Thessalonians 1-3

2 Thessalonians 1:11–12 So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. 12 Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Observation

What a beautiful and powerful prayer!

Paul asks for two things.  First, that God would enable us to live a life worthy of His call.  We have a high calling!  We are called to live like Jesus, to live a noble life of love and service.  God who calls us also empowers us.  When God calls, He equips.

Second, that God would give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do.  Again, the God who prompts also empowers.  Our faith—our relationship with Jesus—should prompt us to do good things.  Happily, God will give us the power to do those things!  To accomplish good, even great things for His sake.

Then the result: the Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live.  This should be the aim of every Christian—that Jesus would be honored because of the way we live.

Application

Two things:

First, I will pray this prayer today over those I love.

Second, I am resolved by God’s power to live so that Jesus will be honored.  This is my aim.  I want my life to reflect His glory; I want my life to be a credit to Him, to bring Him honor.

Prayer: So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.
