Scripture: 1 Kings 2, 1 Chronicles 29, Psalm 95, 2 Thessalonians 1
2 Thessalonians 1:11–12 So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. 12 Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.
I love Paul’s prayer for the Thessalonians. Here’s why.
First, it’s consistent prayer: “we keep on praying for you.” Not a one-and-done prayer—Paul kept on praying for them consistently, faithfully. I thought of a friend facing a challenge whom I prayed for yesterday—and I stopped and prayed for him today, called him and promised to pray for him each day this week. Keep on praying!
Second, we ask God to enable you to live a life worthy of His call. I love the simplicity of this: live a life worthy of God’s call. Of course, we can only do this with God’s help. I was with a friend yesterday who told me that he tried and tried on his own and failed, but when he yielded and asked God for His help, he was able to do it. I pray that God will enable you, empower you, to live a life worthy of His calling.
Third, may God give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Again—we ask God for His help and power—we can’t do it on our own. Our faith in Jesus prompts us to do good. But I don’t always follow the prompts! (I wish I did!). Sometimes I ignore the prompt, sometimes I forget. I need His help! So we pray: God give us the power to do what You prompt us to do!
Fourth, then the name of Jesus will be honored because of the way you live. When we live worthy of our calling, when we do the good that God prompts, other people will see and honor Jesus and give glory to God. “Let your light shine before others so they will see your good deeds and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16. The ultimate goal of our lives is to bring honor to Jesus.
Fifth, you will be honored along with Jesus. This is a surprise. This honor may or may not come from people, but it will certainly come from God who will honor those who honor Him. “Well done good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21.
Sixth, this is made possible because of the grace of God and our Lord Jesus. It all comes back to this: the grace of God. We wouldn’t be saved and in relationship with God without His initiative, His undeserved love and favor and goodness. We couldn’t do any of the things named (pray consistently, live worthy, accomplish good, honor Jesus) without the grace of God. It never starts with us, always with Him and His grace.
So I pray this over you today. Why don’t you pray it over someone you love?
Prayer: We keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of His call. May He give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with Him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.
