Have the supremacy

Scripture: 2 Kings 3-4, Colossians 1

Colossians 1:15–20 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Observation

This is Paul’s soaring hymn of praise to Jesus.  Christ is supreme!  Paul writes of Christ’s relationship to God, to all of creation and to the church.

God: Jesus is the image of the invisible God.  If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.  He has made the invisible God visible.  All the fullness of God dwells in Jesus.  He is fully God.

Creation: Jesus is over all creation, and before all creation.  All things were created in Him, through Him and for Him.  In Him all things hold together.  Through Him all things in all creation were reconciled to God by His death on the cross.

Church: He is the head of the body, the beginning and the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might have the supremacy—first place over all.

Application

I’m going to memorize this section and meditate on it today, and use it to express my worship of Jesus.  I want to have a high view of Christ—as Paul does here—so that Jesus is supreme in my life.  I want Him to have supremacy—first place—in everything in my life.

Prayer: Lord, help me commit these verses to memory, and then let them “work in me” (1 Thessalonians 2:13) that Jesus may have the supremacy in my life.
