Listen carefully…pay attention!

Scripture: Exodus 15-16, Psalm 15, Acts 9

Exodus 15:26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”

“Listen carefully to the Lord and do what is right…pay attention to his commands and keep his decrees…”

This is a classic Hebrew parallelism.  Listen carefully and pay attention are two ways of saying the same thing, as is do what is right and keep his decrees.  Listen and obey.  Pay attention and follow.

The Lord attaches this promise: listen and obey and I will keep you healthy.

Listen carefully…pay attention.  Then do what He says.

I’m currently reading The Emotionally Healthy Leader, by Pete Scazzero.  I read this morning about slowing down for loving union with Jesus; slowing down so that I can listen and pay attention to God.  This follows what Pastor Michael taught us this weekend in his message, “Go slow to go far.”

I thought of Moses spending 40 years in the wilderness watching sheep (s-l-o-w!). When he saw the burning bush, he turned aside to take a closer look (pay attention).  When God saw that he turned aside, God spoke to him.  How many burning bushes do I walk by and miss because I’m in a hurry?  How many times do I miss what God has for me because I’m not listening, not paying attention?  Slow down, turn aside, pay attention.  Listen carefully.

Prayer: Lord, help me to pay attention today, to slow down and listen.
