Consider Jesus

Scripture: Isaiah 5-6, Psalm 102, Hebrews 3

Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.

Observation

The author of Hebrews seems to be writing to Jewish Christians who were in danger of abandoning their faith in Jesus. All through the letter, he calls them back to Jesus, including here where he says, “consider Jesus.”

The word “consider” translates the Greek katanoeo which means “to give very careful consideration to some matter, to think about very carefully, to consider closely.”

Consider Jesus.

Application

I just returned yesterday from a 7 day motorcycle adventure. I spent a good deal of my time on the bike singing and praying, often overwhelmed by the Lord’s goodness to me. I also reflected on how eager I was to tell others about Jesus, and prayed that I would regain that fire.

One way to do that is to consider Jesus. To think deeply about Him, who He is and what He has done for me/us. I often say “correct back to Jesus.” That’s what happens when we consider Jesus.

I also thought that this is a simple invitation to offer others: consider Jesus. Ask people how they are doing, then invite them to consider Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, help me to consider Jesus—to think deeply about Jesus—and renew my fire to share Jesus with others.
