Correct back to Jesus
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 1-3, Psalm 76, John 1
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:18 No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side—he has revealed him.
Observation
Jesus is the Word—the self-expression of God. As such, Jesus has “revealed God” (v. 18) to us. The Greek word for reveal is exegesato; we get the English word “exegete” or “exegesis” from it. It means to explain or describe in detail, to report, to inform, to tell fully. Elsewhere in the New Testament, it means to tell a narrative, to narrate. Jesus is the narrative of God. Jesus is the fully story on God.
This is one of John’s themes: if you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. As Paul would later write, Jesus is “visible image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15). Jesus said, “If you have seen me, you have see the Father.” If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.
Application
Two things:
First, Jesus is the issue. We make all kinds of lesser things into big deals. Jesus is the Big Deal. What do you think of Jesus?
Second, correct back to Jesus. When you have questions about God, where do you go? To Jesus. When I read things in the Bible that confuse me, I correct back to Jesus. He is the Word, the full expression of who God is, what God is like, and what God’s intentions towards us are.
Prayer: Lord, I’m so grateful for Jesus and that by looking at Him, I can see who God is and what God is like.
