Do what God wants
Scripture: Numbers 23-24, Proverbs 6, Matthew 12
Matthew 12:50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.
Observation
Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him. When they were announced, Jesus asked, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” Then he answered his own question by pointing to his disciples and saying, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Jesus’ family are those who do the Father’s will. It is not enough to simply say you are Jesus’ follower; you must follow. You must do what he says, what he wants.
Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.”
Jesus prayed in the garden on the night of his arrest, “Not my will, but yours be done.” And Jesus taught us to pray, “May your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Jesus’ top priority was doing the will of God, and Jesus’ followers make doing God’s will their priority too.
Application
What is God’s will…in this moment, in this situation? That is the question I want to ask, answer and then do.
It’s easy for me to know what I want. What does God want? Sometimes I think that is clear, obvious. Other times, I’m not sure. I want to do my best to discern what God wants and do it.
Prayer: Lord, I want to honestly say, “Not my will but yours be done.” Too often I want my will, not yours. Change my heart. And help me not only to want what you want, but to do it. Let your will be my guiding light today, and help me be a doer of your will.
