I have what I need

Scripture: Leviticus 15-16, Psalm 23, Galatians 1

Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need.

Observation

What a stark statement: I have what I need.  Why?  Because the Lord is my shepherd.  The Lord watches over me, protects me and provides for me like a shepherd does his sheep.  Because of His care, I have what I need.  I am fully provided for.

Application

Two things.

First, this inspires contentment.  Not complacency—there are still goals to be reached, things to be done.  But contentment—I am not unhappy with what I have.

Philippians 4:11–13 I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself. 12 I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. 13 I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.

I am able to be content through Him who strengthens me…because the Lord is my shepherd.  I have what I need.

Second, I have more than I need.  This inspires generosity.  There is no reason to be worried, stingy or tight-fisted when the Lord is your shepherd.  He will give you what you need, and when you share, He’ll give you more.  I not only want to be content through Him, but generous too.

Prayer: Lord, I have what I need.  Thank you.  Let that inspire me to be both content and generous.
