No matter what

Scripture: Daniel 3-4, Mark 12

Daniel 3:16–18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we don’t need to give you an answer to this question. 17 If the God we serve exists, then he can rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and he can rescue us from the power of you, the king. 18 But even if he does not rescue us, we want you as king to know that we will not serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up.”

Observation

This story never fails to inspire me. These three Hebrew men courageously refused to worship Nebuchadnezzar’s gods/idols knowing that they would be burned alive.

On the one hand, they believed that God could rescue them. On the other hand, “even if he does not rescue us” they refused to serve the king’s gods. Either way—if God comes through for them or if He doesn’t—they were not bowing down.

Application

Often our faith can be conditional. If God comes through for me, I will worship Him. But true faith trusts God either way, whether He comes through as we hoped, or not. True faith simply stands strong and says, “I’m serving God no matter what.”

Prayer: Lord, deepen our faith in You so that no matter what happens, good or bad, we lean on You, serve You, trust You and stand for You.
