Tuesday, December 13—Mom’s 93rd birthday!
Sing something that matters!
Scripture: Amos 5-6, Psalm 144, John 3
Psalm 144:3–4
3 Lord, what is a human that you care for him,
a son of man that you think of him?
4 A human is like a breath;
his days are like a passing shadow.
Observation
This passage in Psalm 144 caught my attention for two reasons.
First, it is my Mom’s 93rd birthday. She is healthy and sharp and is in amazing shape for her age. I’m incredibly grateful for her. Mom is one of the most optimistic, positive, and caring people on the planet—I’m blessed to be her son and grateful for her influence. We talk weekly, and I try to see her as often as I can.
Second, I woke up this morning to the news that Coach Mike Leach passed away at 61. I was sad to hear that news; I prayed for him yesterday when I heard that he was hospitalized in critical condition. In a tribute to him, the president of Mississippi State University wrote, “Mike’s death also underscores the fragility and uncertainty of our lives. Three weeks ago, Mike and I were together in the locker room celebrating a hard-fought victory in Oxford.” From wild celebration to sudden death…
Our lives are fragile and uncertain. Or in the words of this psalm, “like a breath…like a passing shadow.”
Application
Every day, every moment is a gift. Our lives are fragile and uncertain. So take every opportunity to express your love to your family and friends. And then make the most of each opportunity, each day. Don’t fritter your life away.
I recently heard a well known musician say that he wanted to “sing something that matters.” That’s what I want to do too. I’m no singer, but I want my life to be lived for God’s glory and purposes. I want my fragile and uncertain life to matter.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for my life, my family and friends, and the chance today to “sing something that matters.”

🥳 Happy Birthday Mom!!!!! 🎊🎂🎉
