Walk with God

Scripture: Genesis 5-6, Psalm 2, Luke 3

Genesis 5:21–24 Enoch was 65 years old when he fathered Methuselah. 22 And after he fathered Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and fathered other sons and daughters. 23 So Enoch’s life lasted 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God; then he was not there because God took him.

Genesis 6:9 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God.

Observation

Three times the phrase “walked with God” shows up in these two chapters: Enoch walked with God (twice) and Noah walked with God, and was righteous, blameless among his contemporaries.

What does it mean to walk with God?  It’s a beautiful image of living with God moment by moment.  Wherever I go, I go with God.  Whatever I do, I do with God.  In the New Testament, the Greek word for “walk” (peripateo) was used often of living with God.  Both Enoch and Noah walked with God in a midst of a world that ignored Him.

Application

In a world where most people ignore God, resist God, run from God or hide from God, I want to walk with God.  People who walk with God stand out—like Enoch and Noah.

Many people have walking partners—someone they walk with regularly for exercise, friendship or both.  Make God your walking partner, then walk through life together.

Today, I want to live moment by moment with an awareness of God’s presence.  I want to be attentive to the Spirit’s leading.  If I’m walking with God, it’s good to let Him lead.  I want to live in relationship, in on-going conversation with the One who is walking with me.  Walk with God!

Prayer: Lord, let’s walk together today.  You lead, I’ll follow.  Let’s walk together all day.
