When you least expect it…

Scripture: Genesis 39-40, Luke 20

Genesis 39:2 The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master.

Observation

“The Lord was with Joseph.”  That is repeated again in 39:3, 21, 23.  The Lord was with Joseph in slavery in Potiphar’s house, and by the end of the chapter, the Lord was with Joseph in prison.  And because of the Lord’s presence, Joseph was successful.  “The Lord made everything he did successful” and the Lord’s blessing was on him and everything he touched.

But don’t miss where this happened: in slavery and in prison.  In the midst of outrageous injustice and hardship.  Many would think that the setting itself precluded God’s presence and favor.  But God showed up where He was least expected.

Application

So often when hardship strikes, we naturally think, “Where is God?  How could He let this happen?”  God was at work in Joseph’s life in the midst of dark and difficult circumstances.  He can do the same in our lives.  When it’s dark and difficult, rather than running away from Him, run towards Him.  Trust Him.  Seek Him.  He is there, and will show His favor even in the midst of hardship.

The Lord is with you—even when you least expect it.

Prayer: Thank you for the promise of Your presence—and blessing—even in the dark and difficult times.  Help me to look for You there.
