Why am I sent here?

Scripture: Leviticus 5-6, Acts 24

Acts 24:24–25 Several days later, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and listened to him on the subject of faith in Christ Jesus. 25 Now as he spoke about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix became afraid and replied, “Leave for now, but when I have an opportunity I’ll call for you.”

Observation

Governor Felix was a Gentile married to a Jewish wife and was well-informed about the Christian movement.  He was conflicted: he wanted to hear Paul’s message, but also hoped for a monetary bribe to free Paul, something that was illegal for Roman governors.  Perhaps this is why Paul spoke to hims about “righteousness (justice), self-control and the judgment to come.” Paul, as always, tailored his presentation for his audience.  He discerned what Felix needed to hear and shaped his gospel presentation accordingly.

Most importantly, Paul answered the question, “Why am I sent here?”  He saw his imprisonment as an opportunity to share the gospel with his captors.  His imprisonment was not a break in his mission, but another opportunity for his mission.  He was on mission no matter where he was!

Application

Two things.

First, I want to constantly be answering that question, “Why am I sent here?”  Even in the most awkward or difficult of circumstances—like jail—I am sent with a purpose, on mission.  What is God doing and how can I join Him?  Who needs to hear of God’s grace and love, the message of “faith in Christ Jesus”?  I want to live a sent life!

Second, I have long known the need to tailor my witness to those I’m with.  It’s not changing the message or hedging the truth.  It’s about emphasis—knowing what this person needs to hear, what will speak to him or her.  It comes from listening carefully and loving truly—and being led by the Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, help me live a sent life today and lead me to say what people need to hear.  You know each person’s heart.  Help me speak to their hearts!
