Big Love

Scripture: Ephesians 3

Ephesians 3:14–19 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on the earth is named. 16 I pray that according to the wealth of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love, 18 you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

I love this prayer!

Paul prays that we may be “filled up to all the fullness of God.” Not just the measure of what we can hold, but the measure of God’s fullness Himself.

How does this happen? By Christ living in our hearts and the Spirit strengthening us with power in the inner person. Then we’ll be able together with all the saints to comprehend the full dimensions of Christ’s love—the height, depth, breadth and length—and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.

I love the superlatives! Christ’s love surpasses knowledge—that is, it goes beyond what we can know. No matter how much you know, there’s more. Fill your bucket, but remember you’re standing at the ocean!

It has always struck me that we know the dimensions of His love together—we comprehend it “with all the saints.” I think as we rub shoulders with other people, some of whom are so different, so difficult to love, we begin to understand the dimensions of God’s love—the height, depth, length and breadth. “Oh, You love this person! That’s Big Love!” And of course, others think that about me.

The more narrow my love, the less I know of God. The broader its dimensions—the more I stretch to love those different from or difficult for me—the more I know God’s love and am filled with His fullness.

Today, I’ll be with lots of different and wonderful people. I want my love to grow and in the process to know God’s love better and be filled with His fullness.

Prayer: Lord, I love You. It’s easy for me to get small and comfortable when You want to make me large and full of You. So stretch me today. Enlarge my capacity for Your love.
