Hear and do

Scripture: Genesis 15-16, Luke 8

Luke 8:19–21 Now Jesus’ mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not get near him because of the crowd. 20 So he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 But he replied to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

This is not Jesus rejecting His family, but redefining family for Him and us. Those closest to Jesus were not His flesh and blood family, but His spiritual family, those who like Him heard and did the will of His Father.

Hear and do. This is a theme in the New Testament. For example, check out Luke 6:47-49 where Jesus compared hearing and doing God’s word to building our home (life) on a solid foundation, whereas hearing and not doing is like building on sand. Or check out James 1:22-25 where James calls us to not only hear the word but do it.

Hear and do—that’s how we live as Jesus’ family.

I’m a simple guy and I love the simplicity of “hear the word of God and do it.” Simple doesn’t mean easy. I often forget, ignore…or just disobey God’s word. But my intention—my aspiration—is to be one of Jesus’ family who hears God’s word and does it.

One of my favorite quotes: when asked the secret of his success, Paul Yonghi Cho, pastor of the world’s largest church at the time said, “I pray and I obey.”

Keep it simple. Hear and do.

Prayer: I love you Lord. I can make things more complex than they need to be. Help me keep it simple: listen to Jesus, do what He says. Hear and do. Pray and obey.
