Imitators to examples
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 1
1 Thessalonians 1:6–7 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, when you received the message with joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, despite great affliction. 7 As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.
Observation
Here is Discipleship 101. The Thessalonians received the gospel and then became imitators of Paul and his cohort and of the Lord. Paul could say, “And what you learned and received and heard and saw in me, do these things.” (Philippians 4:9) Or, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1)
See also 1 Corinthians 4:14-17.
This was Paul’s usual way of spiritual formation. Set an example and call people to imitate. “Watch me and do what I do.”
And once you do that, you become an example for others to follow.
Application
Here is a double awareness to live with today.
First, be an imitator. Be aware of imitating Jesus and those who know Him. Do what Jesus would do; say what Jesus would say.
Second, be an example. Be aware that others are watching you and learning how to follow Jesus from your example.
Imitator to example.
Prayer: Lord, I love You and want to be a better disciple and a better disciple maker. Help me today to imitate Jesus and set an example for others.
