Jesus understands
Scripture: Hebrews 4
Hebrews 4:14–16 Therefore since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.
Observation
What a wonderful promise! Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses and has been tempted in every way we are yet without sin. He understands.
Therefore…come to Him when you need help. You are coming to “the throne of grace,” not judgment. He is for you not against you. You will “receive mercy and find grace.” So…come to Him “confidently.” The word means “open, frank and honest; bold, fearless, courageous, confident.” Come just as you are, boldly and confidently, and you will receive mercy and find grace.
“Whenever we need help.” Isaac Singer said, “I only pray when I’m in trouble, but I’m in trouble all the time.” That’s me.
Application
Last weekend I spoke at a men’s retreat. My subject was “Let it go”—I talked about letting go of your anger, your offenses, and forgiving others as freely as Christ has forgiven you. Let it go. I told them it was hard. Yep.
I got home and immediately struggled to practice what I preached. I got upset with some people and had a hard time letting it go. I couldn’t sleep. I was fed up. Then…I was frustrated with myself for not being able to let it go. Sigh…
Here’s the good news: Jesus knows what that feels like. And He is ready to help me if I’ll come to Him—boldly, honestly, confidently. “I need help. I know You will help me.”Come to Jesus. Approach the throne of grace boldly. And get help.
Prayer: Lord, I love You and I believe these verses to be true. I need Your help, Your mercy and grace for me, and to share with others. I want to be forgiving. I don’t want to be angry. Help me let it go. I’ve got plenty of other things I need help with too! Give me what I need while I’m here in Your presence.
